CONNECT SENTENCES

Tại DOL, học sinh được dạy liên kết câu theo các cách sau:

I. Model 01: A => B. [Linking words], C.

Đây là model dùng khi người viết muốn: nêu ra một ý => phát triển ý đó thành một supporting idea => rồi tiếp tục mở rộng supporting idea đó bằng lý do / ví dụ / hệ quả

Nói đơn giản, đây là model để build paragraph theo từng tầng ý.

Nó đặc biệt phù hợp với kiểu viết:

• topic sentence
• supporting idea 1
• phát triển idea 1
• supporting idea 2
• phát triển idea 2

Học sinh sẽ sử dụng những linking word phù hợp để có thể liên kết câu. Sau đây là các nhóm linking words

Nhóm 1: Nhóm dùng để introduce a supporting idea

Giới thiệu idea 1 (Tương tự cụm Firstly):

• Chief among these is that S + V
• Perhaps one of these is that S + V
• Perhaps the most obvious point is that S + V

Giới thiệu idea 2( Tương tự cụm Secondly):

• Another point/issue/problem/advantage/disadvantage/reason worth mentioning is that S + V
• Another point that should be considered is that S + V

Giới thiệu các khía cạnh:

• Regarding N,
• Concerning N,
• As far as N is concerned,
• Looking at N,

Nhóm 2: Nhóm dùng để develop a supporting idea theo các logic cause-effect hoặc example.

• Effect: Therefore, As a result, Thus, Consequently, …
• Explanation: This is because …, The reason for this is that …
• Example: For example, For instance, By way of illustration, To illustrate, …

Ví dụ:

Idea: Eat too much fast food => gain weight => be at risk of chronic diseases.

Flow hoàn chỉnh: Eating too much fast food can make people gain weight. As a result, they are at risk of chronic diseases.

Lưu ý: Nếu đã dùng linking words thì không dùng referencing như “this” nữa.

Ví dụ sai: Eating too much fast food can make people gain weight. As a result, this can make them face an increasing risk of chronic diseases.

Ví dụ đúng: Eating too much fast food can make people gain weight. As a result, they are at an increasing risk of chronic diseases.

II. Model 02: A => B. B => C.

Đây là model liên kết câu bằng referencing.

Logic của nó là:

câu 1 đi đến B

câu 2 lấy B làm điểm bắt đầu

rồi từ B phát triển tiếp sang C

Nói cách khác, phần cuối của câu trước sẽ được “nhấc lên” và dùng lại trong câu sau.

Đây là model giúp đoạn văn chạy mượt giữa các câu.

Từ dễ sử dụng nhất trong model này là “This”

S - V. This + Verb pattern (verb pattern là các động từ chỉ nhân quả như lead to, result in, allow, enable, cause, make, prevent, …)

Ví dụ:

Idea: Eat too much fast food => gain weight => be at risk of chronic diseases.

Flow hoàn chỉnh: Eating too much fast food can make people gain weight. This can cause them to be at risk of chronic diseases.

Một số cách referencing khác

• This + N
• These + Ns
• Such + N(s)

Nhiều học sinh biết dùng “This”, nhưng không biết:

• “This” đang refer cái gì?
• sau “This” có cần noun không?
• noun nào là noun phù hợp?

Cho nên knowledge cốt lõi ở đây không chỉ là mẫu câu, mà là cách nghĩ ra noun để refer. Sau đây là một số cách

a. Repetition

Lặp lại noun cũ:

• policies → These policies

b. Synonym

Đổi sang từ gần nghĩa:

• measures → These solutions

c. Nominalisation

Biến động từ / tính từ thành danh từ

Mindset:

• V / adj → N

Ví dụ:

• provide → provision(s)

d. Generalisation

Đi từ cụ thể sang khái quát

Mindset:

• specific → This/These + general noun

Ví dụ:

• carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide → These gases / pollutants

Điều cần hiểu

Đây là phần knowledge rất mạnh vì nó dạy học sinh 4 con đường để refer:

• giữ nguyên
• đổi từ gần nghĩa
• danh từ hóa
• khái quát hóa

Nếu nắm được 4 hướng này, học sinh sẽ bớt bí khi cần viết câu 2 bám vào câu 1.

III. Model 03: dùng câu compound/complex để thể hiện luôn A => B => C

Mô hình này sử dụng Complex structure để nối C vào câu A => B ở trước. Một số cấu trúc thường được dùng như

• S - V, which + V.
• S - V, (adverb) Ving.
• S - V, and therefore/thus S - V
• S - V because/since/as S - V
• S - V due to/thanks to/because of N
• …

Ví dụ:

Idea: Eat too much fast food => gain weight => be at risk of chronic diseases.

Flow hoàn chỉnh:

• Eating too much fast food can make people gain weight, meaning that they are at risk of chronic diseases.
• Eating too much fast food can make people gain weight, which means that they are at risk of chronic diseases.
• Eating too much fast food can make people gain weight, and therefore they are at risk of chronic diseases.
• Eating too much fast food can make people gain weight, potentially causing them to be at risk of chronic diseases.

IV. Combining different models to produce a paragraph with diverse range of cohesive devices

Khi đã học xong, Học sinh được khuyến khích sử dụng linh hoạt 3 models trong bài viết để thỏa mãn yêu cầu của IELTS khi liên kết câu: dùng đa dạng cohesive devices.

Sau đây là một ví dụ, liên kết các flow idea thành 1 đoạn hoàn chỉnh

Outline:

Topic Sentence: Advantages of private healthcare

Supporting Idea 1: Private healthcare facilities → emphasize personalized care

Explanation: (their doctors and specialists) more time to discuss in detail with each patient → lead to a deeper understanding of patient needs and preferences → more tailored treatment plans → improved treatment outcome.

Supporting Idea 2: non-public healthcare providers → prioritize patient comfort and provide amenities that enhance the overall experience

Example: (Vietnam) some private hospitals and clinics → offer private rooms with better-quality bedding, improved meal options, or entertainment systems → ensure a more comfortable stay during treatment → contribute to a faster recovery

Finished paragraph:

There are some distinct advantages brought about by private healthcare. Chief among these is that private healthcare facilities tend to emphasize personalized care. Specifically, their doctors and specialists can allocate more time to discuss in detail with each patient, thereby allowing for a deeper understanding of patient needs and preferences.
